CCHL a nice fit in Cornwall

Gone are the days of the erstwhile Cornwall Royals of the Quebec Major Jr. Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League.

But there is still high-level junior hockey in Cornwall.

Cornwall Colts are long-time members of the Central Canada Hockey League, having joined it in 1992 when the OHL Royals left town.

Now owned, coached and managed by former OHL scoring star Ian MacInnis (Kingston Canadians, Belleville Bulls, Soo Greyhounds, Cornwall Royals), the Colts are not only successful on the ice but at the gate.

Thus far this season, the Colts lead the 12-team CCHL in attendance with a per-match average of 891.

Through 27 games thus far this season, the Colts have a record of 15-9-3 in what is a hotly-contested CCHL.

As for MacInnis, his greatest OHL season as a player came while starring for Cornwall during the 1982-1983 campaign when he scored 54 goals while skating on a line with future National Hockey League star Doug Gilmour and Steve Driscoll.

MacInnis was acquired by the Royals from the Greyhounds early in the ’82-83 campaign for forward Todd Sepkowski, a Sault Ste. Marie product.

Now, as the man in charge of the CCHL Colts, this is the 54-year old MacInnis’s seventh season back in Cornwall.
