Retired National Hockey League player and coach Craig Hartsburg has accepted an overture from Hockey News North to write a regular column relative to minor hockey development and putting more fun back in the game.

The 58-year old Hartsburg resides in the Sault Ste. Marie area with his wife, Peggy.

The reputable Hartsburg retired from the game in 2016 after an eventful 27-year coaching career that included 19 seasons in the NHL and successful stints in the Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League.

As a player, Hartsburg had a world-class career as an all-star defenseman with both the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL and the erstwhile Minnesota North Stars of the NHL. He was captain of the Greyhounds for two of his three OHL seasons with them and was captain of the North Stars for seven of his 10 NHL seasons with them.

Hartsburg’s spectacular playing career was cut short at age 30 due to hip and knee injuries.

His column with Hockey News North will focus on trying to make hockey more fun and enjoyable, while not losing sight of development, for young players, their parents and coaches.

Since retiring from the game as a career coach, Hartsburg has lent his assistance to the Soo Pee Wee Hockey League as a mentor and advisor and has offered to help out the Sault Major Hockey Association in a similar volunteer role.

“I really want to stress making the game more fun for all who have a part in it,” said Hartsburg. “I am retired now and want to give back to the game and help minor hockey development in any way I can.”
