Hockey North Show feedback

The 2017-2018 version of the weekly Hockey North Show that I host on Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m. on Sault Ste. Marie radio station ESPN 1400 is underway.

In an effort to bring more involvement and awareness to the Hockey North Show, I am going to reprise some of it in condensed form here on HockeyNewsNorth.com the day after the airing.

Basically, I am going to take a few snippets that aired on the Hockey North Show and print them up here on HockeyNewsNorth.com.

I am also inviting any feedback on the Hockey North Show by simply sending me an e-mail via randyrusson@shaw.ca or by posting here on HockeyNewsNorth.com.

Basically, the feedback is designed for anyone wishing to pass on any requests for guest appearances or material that you might want to hear about on the Hockey North Show.

Jim Capy, coach of the Soo Eagles of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League, was the featured guest on last night’s first edition of the Hockey North Show.

Also appearing on the debut edition of the Hockey North Show for this season was Kevin Cain, former multiple-championship general manager of the NOJHL’s Soo Thunderbirds. Cain, who now manages the Soo Thunderbirds of the Great North Midget Hockey League in addition to operating Cain Hockey Management, will appear regularly on the Hockey North Show, giving his insight and opinions.

At any rate, a few takeaways from the first edition of the Hockey North Show for the 2017-2018 season include the aforementioned Capy talking not only about his Eagles team but about one of his former players, Nolan Makkonen.

Makkonen is about to enter his first full season in the Ontario Hockey League. A 1999 birth-year defender, Makkonen began the 2016-2017 season in the NOJHL with the Capy-coached Eagles before being called up to the OHL’s Guelph Storm.

A Sault Ste. Marie native, Makkonen was traded during the summer by Guelph — along with a boat-load of high draft picks — to Sudbury for prize defenseman Owen Lalonde, who was the second overall pick at the 2016 OHL draft.

Capy, appearing on the Hockey North Show, had plenty good to say about Makkonen.

“The things that really stand out about Nolan is how much he wants to learn and how badly he wants to improve as a hockey player,” Capy began. “He is very coach-able and takes everything in. He is a very smart player who keeps it simple on the ice and makes very few mistakes.”

Capy also talked at length about the 2017-2018 edition of his NOJHL Eagles, a young team with only two returning players — forwards Jake Palmerio and Jake Saxton.

Speaking specifically of Palmerio and Saxton, Capy was quick to praise the leadership and ability of the veteran duo.

“They are our leaders on and off the ice,” Capy relayed. “They are the type of players and character individuals that you build a team around.”

As for some of what Cain talked about as he took his turn behind the Hockey North Show microphone, the affable Canada Post worker talked about what he, coach Jamie Henderson and the assistants are trying to accomplish with the first-year Soo minor midgets.

“We want to develop players the right way by playing them in all situations and running practices designed to bring out and teach individual and team skills,” Cain relayed.

“Jamie as a coach puts an unbelievable amount of time into preparing and then teaching the kids,” Cain added in further praise of Henderson.

So, there you ago, a few takeaways from the 2017-2018 debut edition of the Hockey North Show on ESPN 1400.
