Rick Kowalsky’s 12-year apprenticeship as a minor pro head coach has finally resulted in a promotion to the National Hockey League.

The 46-year old Kowalsky, who captained the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League to the 1993 Memorial Cup championship, has been hired by the NHL’s New Jersey Devils as an assistant coach.

Kowalsky had been head coach of New Jersey’s American Hockey League affiliate at Albany and Binghamton for eight years. Before that, he coached in the lower-level, East Coast Hockey League for four seasons.

Kowalsky’s wife, Debbie (nee Grigg), is from Sault Ste. Marie. The couple has three children.
