Sault Ste. Marie could be home to two teams in the Great North Midget Hockey League effective the 2017-2018 season.

A source with knowledge of the situation told HockeyNewsNorth.com that the Sault Major Hockey Association hopes to enter a minor midget team in the Great North loop for the ’17-18 season.

The minor midget team would in addition to the Soo Greyhounds major midget squad that already plays within what is currently a seven-member Great North.

Sudbury presently operates two teams within the Great North — the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves and the Sudbury Minor Midget Wolves.

If the Soo is awarded a minor midget team for next season it would be for players with 2002 birth dates only. The Greyhound major midgets would then be mainly comprised of players with 2001 and 2000 birth dates.

A ruling on whether to accept a second Soo team into the Great North league is expected next month. The league operates under the jurisdiction of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association.

  1. Lets hope that this come’s to pass and regard less kudo’s to Sault Major for taking the initiative on this.
