One of those Knights

It has been said and written that anything can happen in a one-game final to decide a championship. Well, the Sault Ste. Marie high school hockey champion St. Mary’s Knights are proof positive of that notion.

The host Knights, who won all three of their games during the round-robin portion of the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association AAA level championship tournament, were stunned by the Horizon Eagles of Sudbury in Tuesday’s title tilt at John Rhodes Community Centre.

St. Mary’s had started the two-day tournament with an easy 6-2 victory over Horizon and the Knights were clear-cut favourites to again defeat the visiting Eagles in the championship match.

But for the Knights, it was not meant to be, as the underdog Eagles scored a decisive 5-2 win to claim the NOSSA crown.
