Sault Major Hockey Association and its coaching selection committee have confirmed the six AAA head coaches for the 2018-2019 season.

All who applied were required to submit a package that consisted of a resume and plans for financial responsibility and on-ice instruction.

All of the successful candidates will participate in the coach mentor program that will be led by Craig Hartsburg.

The reputable Hartsburg retired from the game in 2016 after an eventful 27-year coaching career that included 19 seasons in the National Hockey League and successful stints in the Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League.

As a player, Hartsburg had a world-class career as an all-star defenseman with both the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL and the erstwhile Minnesota North Stars of the NHL.

He was captain of the Greyhounds for two of his three OHL seasons and was captain of the North Stars for seven of his 10 NHL seasons.

Meantime, the coaches selection committee has agreed to continue to monitor all coaches as the season progresses. Committee members will attend practices and games to try to ensure that a high level of coaching is maintained throughout the season.

The six AAA coaches, and their teams, for the 2018-2019 season are as follows.

PEE WEE MINOR AAA — Chris Huckson.

PEE WEE MAJOR AAA — Mike Cowan.

BANTAM MINOR AAA — Dominic Deluca.

BANTAM MAJOR AAA — Jeff Toms.

MIDGET MINOR AAA — Jamie Henderson.

MIDGET MAJOR AAA — Alex Cruise.

Sault Major will announce who its AA level coaches will be after the AAA player tryouts have been completed.

What you think about “Sault Major picks coaches”

  1. I would like to congratulate all the coaches who were successful in this interview process wth the selection committee! Toots and his staff had some really tough decisions. Personally I am excited to work and try to help these gentlemen and also the rest of the coaches that SMHA hire. There will be some who will question the process or the individuals who were successful. It happens every year. That comes with the territory of being a coach. Saying that , these guys all deserve a chance to prove themselves and they also deserve the opportunity to improve themselves as well. There is no perfect coach. Just as there are no perfect players. Looking forward to trying to help!
