The experienced and reputable Zoltan (Toots) Kovacs has joined the executive of the Sault Major Hockey Association as a vice president, HockeyNewsNorth.com has confirmed.

Kovacs was appointed earlier this week to replace Steve Lawrence on the Sault Major board. Lawrence resigned in May of this year but wasn’t replaced.

“After Steve resigned we spread the duties around but now Toots is coming on board to support us with coaches mentoring and our coaches selection process,” Sault Major president Richard Barsanti told HockeyNewsNorth.com.

The 58-year old Kovacs, who is a retired provincial youth justice system worker, has extensive hockey experience as a player and a coach.

After moving up the ranks of Sault Major as a youngster, Kovacs then went on to play in the Ontario Hockey League as a left winger for both the Soo Greyhounds and Windsor Spitfires. He then played at the Atlantic University Athletics level for the St. Thomas Tommies.

As a coach, Kovacs has been an assistant in the OHL with the Greyhounds under his close friend Craig Hartsburg. Kovacs has also been a head coach in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League with the Soo Thunderbirds and is currently their associate coach under John Parco.

An enthusiastic but no-nonsense individual, Kovacs told HockeyNewsNorth.com that his new position with Sault Major “is definitely going to be a challenge. But I love challenges.”
