Short on players due to injury and with just 12 skaters in the lineup, the minor midget Soo Thunderbirds gave it their all only to fall 4-2 to the major midget New Liskeard Cubs on Saturday night.

Not only were the Thunderbirds short on players due to injury, goalie Noah Zeppa played the game despite battling the flu.

Still, the youthful Thunderbirds stayed with the elder Cubs over the course of the match only to come out on the short end.

A first-year team in the Great North Midget Hockey League, the Thunderbirds now have a record of 0-4-3 through 7 regular season outings.

In Saturday’s showdown with fully-manned New Liskeard, the Soo actually took a 1-0 lead and was tied with the visitors 2-2 after the first period.

After Jason McCormick staked the Soo to a 1-0 lead and New Liskeard went ahead 2-1, speedy forward Justin Mauro tied the game 2-2 with a spectacular breakaway goal in the final seconds of the first stanza.

Taking a long pass from defenseman Mateo Perri, Mauro motored in and double deked New Liskeard goalie Jake McGuire with a back-hand tally.

But New Liskeard would score twice in the second period for a 4-2 lead and then shut down the Soo in the third period for the victory.

Logan Williamson paced the New Liskeard attack with two goals and an assist.

As the gutsy Thunderbirds put forth a pat-on-the-back effort in an against-all-odds team performance, those who particularly stood out included the aforementioned Mauro and Perri as well as forwards Brock Santa Maria and Ty Zachary and defenseman Jack Matier.

What you think about “Cubs clip winged Birds”

  1. Bang On 100 % Randy !
I am sure that the Kids (and the Parents and Grand parents) from the Thunderbirds Minor Midget Team truly appreciate all of the positive covrage from you.

  2. Proud grandpa, there’s some others relatives of other teams that would like some good coverage to. Maybe ask randy for us.

    1. Obviously Randy you have a problem with the major midgets. Don’t see a picture of players or goalies on here anywhere. Or a decent write up about any of them or the staff. Terrible for the Sault.

          1. Yes, Derek, your wisdom shines through. Another “click” on the site, courtesy you.

  3. Always checking to see if you decide to give better coverage for the people following more hockey than just your favorite team. Sad coverage as always.

  4. Derek James now there is a Jack Ass if I have ever met one Ha Ha. Playing in to Randy’s hands like a Fiddle what a fool you are Derek Ha Ha.

  5. The GNML is a 2 team league and everyone else is simply playing for third place. There’s no competition for Sudbury and North Bay.

  6. My geuss is that “DEREK JAMES” is pissed that RR has not written about Derek’s kid enuf. Get a life Derek. We all like your kid / he’s a good player

  7. Its no wonder that hockey in the Sault is such a mess. The way I read this is that one of the Sault parents from the Major Midget’s {Derek James} is upset at the amount of coverage that the Minor Midget’s are getting. What a joke! You should be happy that the new team are getting such good coverage … its a lot more than the Midget Teams get from any Media here. I can see this as an Example as to why the Sault are the laughing stock of Minor Hockey in the North.

    1. nickel cap wolves grad your last comment says it all. How long has sudbury been the laughing stock of minor hockey in the north. And it goes all the way up to the sudbury wolves of the ohl. As my son was growing up playing minor hockey all the way through to junior we feasted on the sudbury teams time after time. But now you seem to have your chest out . While derek james may seem like an ass you my friend are a real beauty.
Keep up the good coverage Randy. No doubt you are drawing many readers even those with no class..
