Soo Major Thunderbirds can escape the basement of the Great North Midget Hockey League this weekend as the New Liskeard Cubs come to town. And it won’t be an easy travel trek for New Liskeard, which has a home game before it hits the road to the Soo.

New Liskeard, which has a record of 3-10-0, is two points up on the Major Thunderbirds, who are in last place in the nine-team Great North with a record of 2-13-0.

The Major Thunderbirds are home to the Cubs on Saturday night at 6:30 and Sunday morning at 11:00 at John Rhodes Community Centre.

But before New Liskeard boards the bus for the Soo, it has a home game tonight at 8:00 against the Timmins Majors at Don Shepherdson Memorial Arena.

Timmins, with eight points from a record of 4-11-0, will be out to snap a seven-game losing skid when it heads to New Liskeard for tonight’s match. New Liskeard is also on a losing streak of its own, having dropped five straight games.

Veteran forward Maxim Breault leads New Liskeard in scoring with 9 goals, 6 assists, 15 points.

Veteran forward Brennen Martel tops the Timmins scoring chart with 3 goals, 7 assists, 10 points.

And rookie defenseman Michael Barone is the Soo’s leading scorer with 5 goals, 2 assists, 7 points. The Major Thunderbirds are fresh from a win over the North Bay Minor Trappers last weekend that halted a 13-game losing streak for the Soo.
