Soo Major Thunderbirds and Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves have both advanced to the semi-finals of the Great North Midget Hockey League playoffs.

Both the Soo and Sudbury scored victories today in third-and-deciding matches of their respective, opening-round, playoff sets.

Playing on the road and with a short-handed lineup, the Soo upended the New Liskeard Cubs by a 6-3 margin as 2002 birth-year goalie Noah Zeppa again stood tall for the Major Thunderbirds.

Playing at home — and aided by several player call-ups from the Sudbury Minor Wolves — the Nickel Capital Wolves ousted the Timmins Majors by a 4-1 score.

Fourth-ranked Soo will now play the unbeaten, top-seeded, North Bay Major Trappers in one Great North semi-final while third-place Sudbury will face off against second-ranked Kapuskasing Flyers in the other second-round set.

In today’s games:

  • Cole Delarosbil, Jacob Sewell-Addison, Jordan Ritchie, Nick Niro, Dylan Forsyth and Michael Chaffay scored for the Soo in its win over New Liskeard, which got two goals from Maxim Breault and one from Zachery Lajoie. Team-leading scorer Brock Santa Maria (in photo, above) added an assist for the Soo, giving him a point in all three games in the series.
  • Mitchell Martin tallied twice and Zacharie Giroux and Jean Giguere found range once apiece in Sudbury’s win over Timmins, which got its lone marker from Landon Deforge.

What you think about “Great North playoff progress”

  1. It’s actually embarrassing for Sudburys call ups to get all of their points for them I think it would be a way different series with out them Randy
