Great North starts and stops

There is a form of parity within the Great North Midget Hockey League. For example, over the past week, the North Bay Trappers handed the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves their first loss of the season only to then be upset by the Soo Greyhounds.

HOW THEY STAND

Sudbury leads the major midget division with 22 points from a record of 11-1-0 followed by North Bay with a 9-2-1 mark for 19 points and surging Soo with 15 points from a 7-5-1 showing. Then it’s the Kapuskasing Flyers with 13 points from a 6-6-1 record, New Liskeard Cubs at 4-8-0 for 8 points and the Timmins Majors with a 3-7-1 mark for 7 points.

On the minor midget side, North Bay Trappers have 10 points from a 5-4-0 record, Sudbury Wolves are 3-2-0 for 6 points and Soo Thunderbirds are 0-6-3 for 3 points.

LIGHTING IT UP

The Nickel Capital Wolves forward duo of Carson McMillan and Joe Mazur are the league scoring leaders with 24 and 22 points, respectively…Forward Nick Davis of the major midget Trappers has 15 goals in 12 games…A top minor midget forward is David Campbell, a Soo product who is playing for North Bay and who has 9 goals in 9 games…Bright spots for Timmins are defenseman Frederic Leclair-Pouw with 5 goals, 7 assists, 12 points and forward Austin Holmes with 6 goals in 10 games…Kapuskasing has two veteran forwards who have already passed the double digit mark in goals — Jacob Comeau has 14 and Mathieu Parent has 13.

PUT A KAP ON IT

If Kapuskasing can take advantage of home ice, the Flyers may be poised for a move up in the standings.

As Kap has kept it even with a 6-6-1 record through 13 games thus far, only three of the matches have been on home ice.

BETWEEN THE PIPES

A couple of goalies have good numbers on teams with below .500 records.

Dylan Dallaire of Timmins has a 3-2-1 record and a 3.29 goals against average for a Majors team that has a 3-7-1 record. And Noah Zeppa of the Soo minor midgets has a record of 0-2-3 and a 3.90 goals against average on a Thunderbirds team that has a record of 0-6-3.

Meanwhile, the Soo major midgets are getting big wins from both of their goalies. Dawson Hunter has won 4 games for the Greyhounds and Andrew Uschenko has 3 victories.
