Hard work on the Express

Brennen Martel is not known as a lamp lighter. He tallied just five goals in 32 games with the Timmins Majors of the Great North Midget Hockey League in 2018-2019 and has dented the twine three times in 31 outings with the Espanola Express of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League thus far in 2019-2020.

But the 5-foot-8, 150-pound forward with a 2001 birth date has a work ethic and willingness to learn that has endeared him to hard-boiled Espanola head coach Dave Clancy.

“Brennen came to the Express this season when we were trying to retool our lineup with players who wanted to come in and work hard for a place in the lineup,” Clancy said of Martel. “Brennen works hard every practice to learn systems and at developing his individual skills.

“He works hard every day to stay in the lineup and realizes that it takes everyone to buy in and that when his opportunity comes, that he is ready to contribute to the team,” Clancy added in further praise of Martel, who in total, has three goals, three assists, six points in 31 games of spot duty with the Express this season.
