Major project in Timmins

There is nowhere to go but up for the Timmins Majors. And the Great North Midget Hockey League team is already planning ahead to the 2017-2018 campaign.

The Majors finished last in the seven-team Great North in 2016-2017 with a record of 2-32-2. A major issue that affected the Majors was that nine midget-aged players left the Timmins area to play elsewhere, including the junior level.

With a three-day tryout camp taking place this weekend at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex in Timmins, there’s a new look to the Majors staff that includes first-year head coach Brandon Perry.

The 28-year old Perry, who played for the Timmins midgets about a dozen years ago, will be assisted by Derick Martin, Darren Thib and goalie coach Trevor McGee. Ron Holmes and Doug Cheechoo will share the general manager duties.

Of note, Perry played three full seasons as a forward with the Kingston Voyageurs of the Ontario Jr. Hockey League before a four-year career with the Queen’s University Golden Gaels. The 35-year old Martin is a former defenseman with the Hull Olympiques of the Quebec Major Jr. Hockey League who went on to a lengthy minor-pro career.

Meanwhile, the Majors are expecting more than 50 players at this weekend’s tryouts, including ones from neighbour towns such as Iroquois Falls.

The aforementioned Holmes refers to the Timmins-based Majors as a regional team.

“Being AAA midget, I would have to say it’s a regional team, so we need the support from out-of-town kids to help contribute to that. That’s huge for this level of hockey,” Holmes told the Timmins Daily Press.

  1. Oh ya, almost forgot. Wouldn’t Iroquois Falls settle for GNHL hockey? How can the Timmins Majors compete with the Timmins Rock?
