Majors close in on Hounds

Timmins Majors completed a two-game sweep of the Soo Greyhounds today to close the gap between fourth and fifth place within the major midget division of the Great North Midget Hockey League.

Timmins tallied three times in the third period to register a 4-2 win over the penalty prone visitors from the Soo. The Greyhounds have now racked up a league-leading 801 penalty minutes through 35 games within the Great North.

The Majors began the weekend set with the Greyhounds on Saturday with a resounding 10-3 victory.

The sweep for Timmins moves it to within three points of the Soo in the standings with the Majors holding five games in hand.

Timmins now has 25 points from a record of 12-17-1, which puts it just behind fourth-place Soo, which has 28 points from a record of 12-19-4.

The Greyhounds have only one game to play in the regular season while the Majors have six contests remaining.

What you think about “Majors close in on Hounds”

  1. These Hounds are truly a pathetic bunch. Starts at the top and goes all the way down. Might be the worst AAA Midget team this city has ever seen. The Minors could’ve have easily beat them last week as well.

  2. No way we should get swept by Timmins with all do respect to Timmins they are not a better team than we are. No way not even close.

  3. To Blue Steel: Calling them a pathetic bunch shows your ignorance as an individual. Yes that is what is wrong with hockey in the Sault it’s individuals like yourself. A few of these pathetic major midgets have signed as affiliates with junior teams among other things. The boys are on the bus as we speak it sure didn’t take long to spew this garbage I highly doubt other cities are doing this in fact I know it just a prime example of the pathetic idiots that trash our young athletes in the Soo. Shame on u at least wait a day unbelievable

    1. Wait a day? What difference does it make? These kids lead the league in penalties by a country mile! Did you watch the game against the Minors? (Who are also terrible but deserve some leeway being their inaugural season) Just calling it as I see it. Am I wrong? A bad team top to bottom

  4. Let me repeat myself it’s people like u that is giving the Soo a bad name wow. Leeway the minors have been playing together for years and yes we all watched the game the minors lost plain and simple. It’s pretty sad when adults have to put down these young athletes believe me I have seen much worse and with top players on these teams u obviously are uneducated my friend. U are a disgrace shame on you I hope u don’t have a child that plays the game

    1. It’s not me giving the Soo a bad name. It’s our highest level AAA team and staff that are doing that. Yes that’s right the players that might’ve set a record for penalties taken are giving the Soo a bad name. Or maybe it’s the staff that cherry picks which tournaments and road trips they are going to attend that give us a bad name? Maybe it’s the practices that are giving us a bad name! A far cry from the days of MH I’ll tell you that. Maybe the players should put down their phone and iPad and interact with each other on the bus? Built a little comradery? Maybe the coaches on the bus can help with that? Like I said before this “team” if you even want to call them that is a disgrace on many levels. Top down.

  5. You are absolutely right, it starts at the top. Sault major led by MC are ruining young players in ssm by putting coaches like KP in charge of a team. Cmon, do you see his practices? Along with the horrible program he has? It’s like it’s a peewee B.B. team the way he runs things. What his program doesn’t have compared to other teams in other markets is to long to list. Seriously. These poor players. This leads to Players everywhere else developing while the sault has sault major and there terrible coaching picks like this guy running teams and hoping they can do win on there own because they are not receiving a lick of quality teaching throughout the season. Find a player who has tremendously developed while playing for this guy and credits him. Parents of these players should be mad.
I’m sure these players were eager to learn this year but this guy, with all his bogus paperwork, just doesn’t have what it takes at this level.
Don’t agree? Go watch his practices . If you know hockey you’ll know why.
And by chance if you do go watch his practice before commenting , stick around to see a real coach run a practice just after him.

  6. What about the five wins the Major midgets had in the month of December nothing reported on that. Clearly it’s been nothing but negativity since these boys laced up their skates in September. I have no dog in this fight and enjoy reading these articles but it’s comments like that of Blue Steel that makes me embarrassed to be from the Soo. Talk about crossing the line. I like look forward to watching both the minors and the majors in the playoffs both teams have many talented young hockey players that will move forward next year. Good Luck to both teams and remember why u play the game you still have many supporters and just a handful of naysayers.

  7. This article is clearly about the battle for 4th Place between us and Timmins. Don’t blame Randy … he didnt lose the games for us.

  8. Thnks Derek sticking to the facts that is what makes these articles a good read not targeting the players who have no way of defending themselves but are well aware of what’s being said about them and the lack of support from their home town

  9. Blue Steel u sound like u travel with the Major Midgets on the bus u know so much starting to think your kid plays on the team must not get much ice time or is one of the kids afraid to take a hit or runs home and tells Daddy everything sure sounds like it to me. Like I said a disgruntled parent plain and simple IMO

  10. I shake my head when I read that RR’s articles have all been negative. All you got to do is click on the GNMHL button to read all of the articles that he has written about the League and so many of the Players. I truly beleive that if you give RR some thing good to write about then he will write it. He does not make the negative stuff up .. rather it is all fact. So if the truth hurts some of you then so be it!

  11. The Pilon twins toughest kids in any league drawing many penalties it sure didn’t hurt them always enjoyed watching them all the way up regardless of their penalty minutes

  12. A and R u are right not disputing what Randy writes but read some of the comments that’s what makes us shake our heads Randy always provides a good read

  13. The Soo Major Midgets need a new head coach with new ideas and a fresh start. The team record is a reflection of a lack of dissipline and a lack of structure. The talent is there on this Greyhounds team, but the talent is not being properly developed. No shame in stepping aside Coach Pancoe. Time to give another Coach a shot at running the Major Midget Program in SSM.

  14. SMC is well coached … have done great in tournaments… and are around top 10 in Ontario if my sources are correct…. and the teams they play are allowed AAA and Jr. A players (playing AAA AND highschool at the same time) A highly skilled team playing well and enjoying hockey.

    1. SMC, the league they play in and the tournaments they go to aren’t anywhere near the level of the GNMHL or AAA caliber tournaments. Let’s stop comparing the two now quickly. Any kid worth his salt isn’t giving up the opportunity to play AAA hockey to play high school hockey that’s just a fact. Maybe one day high school will overtake AAA and be a development program like it is in the United States. Not there yet, not even close. Only reason a parent would take the high school route is cost.

      1. yes they are…the league maybe not…but the tournaments…absolutely…there are some who say they could beat these Maj. Midgets…and I bet they probably could too

        1. also…there are at least 6 kids on SMC, not including other high school teams that are as good if not better than the current rostered players on the Maj.Midgets.
And that is plain and simple fact…..

          1. Oh sure I bet there are!! And yet they go play against superior heights lol. Nothing against high school hockey or sports in general but call it what it is. Glorified rec league for young kids. Anyone with hopes of being drafted or continuing to play on a high level junior team surely aren’t playing high school hockey. If you’re choosing to play at SMC I assume your heart is more set on partying with your friends every weekend. That’s how a scout thinks but there are exceptions even if it’s rare. Hope your son is enjoying his 9-1 games against White Pines. Next stop men’s league.

        2. There’s not one single player in high school that is anywhere near Caleb Wood? caliber. He would cut through SMC like a knife through butter. SMC has no chance against the Major Midgets. None. As bad as the Hounds have been they are of much higher quality than St Mary’s. You’re delusional to think otherwise.

        3. Also you do know that AAA level players have been allowed to play high school hockey forever right? That is nothing new. I’ve yet to ever hear someone say high school hockey is comparable to AAA until now. Apples to Oranges my friend. And although I’m sure the coach at SMC is decent he also has never played anywhere and has never coached anything outside of high school hockey aka rec league.

          1. Why don’t you compare them to the rest of the team and not Wood… Nice try on your argument….. Wood is one player on an abysmal team…. And as for your aaa argument….. The soo maj midget… Is a glorified AA team…. With a AAA badge…… Top. 10 in Ontario. High school. Vs bottom in aaa… Lol.. Give your head a shake…. There is a reason kids are going Around saying one and done and should have played high school….. We aren’t competing at aaa… Something need to change… I’ll. Call. My buddy… He’ll give you 6.names.right.now.that could. Make. Aaa better

          2. 3and it goes to show how little you know or watch.. White pines doesn’t have a team…. So keep flapping

          3. Try again Blue Steel the coach for SMC coached AAA for 3 years. As for your comment on Caleb Wood, he would be unnoticed in a game against SMC and I would further offer this…if he is so good why didn’t he get drafted as a 16 year old, not the token 17 year old draft?? Secondly, as for high school hockey there are 10 players that all played AAA right up until Bantam that completely bailed out of AAA because of this coach , the shit program and the ridiculous cost.

I cannot understate this enough…. this team will likely place dead last because:
            A) 2/3rds of the AAA caliber 01s and 00s left the program
            B) head coach is clueless
            C) 2/3rds of the team are not AAA calibre, mostly played house league the majority of their careers

And lastly , make no mistake SMC would massacre this major Midget team in an exhibition game. I am 100% confident that even Mr Panco would know enough to stay away from such a challenge, as he likely has.

Get your facts straight Blue Steel!

            IN MY OPINION.

  15. The Majors really have no help between the pipes u can blame penalties ect. but the man in the mask has to be able to stop some shots. Not totally his fault but let’s face a big portion watched enough games to comment. Time for these coaches to start going with their no 1 if they would have done it sooner they wouldn’t be in this predicament. This is AAA shots should not be going in from the blue line

  16. Informed u have a few good points but there are some pretty talented players on the roster just look at the stats. Quite a few signed as affiliates with junior teams. As for SMC yes they have a few good players that may have made the Majors one in particular that leads the league in scoring. Also a few good tendies at the high school level. Whether it’s high school or Soo Major the players are where they want to be playing the game they love. Time we stopped bashing the players don’t u think.

  17. Never heard one kid say they regret not playing high school although I did hear a high school player say he regrets not playing AAA. To each his own I guess hopefully both the minors and the Majors bounce back and end the season on a good note oh wait there is always next year and the story goes on………….

  18. White pines doesn’t even have a team! Hahaha further proving my point! High school hockey is rec league. No player playing high school hockey this year will be drafted because that’s where players go to party and have fun. Sorry to burst your bubble “informed” . And Wood would single handedly destroy St Mary’s, no need to even bring anyone else’s names up. You and Gordie are both clueless … IN MY OPINION

    1. Well then Blue Steel get your coach to challenge SMC to an exhibition game. I will donate $100 to the charity of your choice the major Midgets win. You obviously have absolutely no idea of the caliber of 00s and 01s that have opted for high school hockey this year. The majors barely beat our minor Midgets. Think about that, they just squeaked by a team of 15 year olds.

Bring the challenge to SMC. $100 on the table to the charity of your choice if SMC loses.

      1. Never once said that I’m a fan of the Midget Hounds or the coach. Quite the contrary if you scroll up and read it’s there for you. Playing St Mary’s is beneath a AAA team sorry. Not sure when high school hockey or sports were perceived to be above rep teams but here we are. You parents might wanna stop sipping the kool aid and wake up!!! High school sports is where players go to relax and enjoy their friends! It isn’t competitive high level sports like AAA. Please wake up

        1. Sipping the Koolaide?? Blue Steel…obviously the kids that left the program for high school have no desire to play at higher levels and certainly realize their draft eligibility is done. So I would agree with you that high school hockey is certainly more of a rec league. However, in comparison to the little to no development value AAA in the Sault offers, it certainly is a bargain in terms of coaching, cost and maintaining a social and academic high school experience.

  19. Hey Blue Steel… You said the Maj. Midgets were Pathetic… Please make up your mind as SMC isn’t Pathetic….

    1. For a AAA team they are pathetic. St Mary’s is rec league. Beneath AAA hockey. The better players play for the Greyhounds. If you pulled your son out of the GNMHL to go play rec league it’s either because of cost or you were scared for them to get cut. I’m sure he’s having fun playing for SMC I really don’t doubt that. Plus he has every weekend to go out and have fun with his friends. AAA is competitive hockey to try and get noticed, high school is party time. Big difference

      1. nope nice try…don’t have a son on that team…but i know parents who’s children were unsuccessfully recruited by the maj. midgets…. and Like I said…they opted not to go to the AAA midgets…no, not because they are scared of being cut but because they are tired of the same old bullshit….i guess you would have made fun of Colin Miller too…. like I said….my buddy can name 6 MINIMUM who would crack that “AAA” line up EASILY….and that doesn’t include the other schools…. yes…because they are all getting drafted in the joke of a supplemental draft…please….

        1. …and forgot to add….all those AAA kids will be in the beer league to…..not my opinion…fact…look up the stats

  20. Both midget teams leaving the soo Thursday for Peterborough petes tournament of champions. Majors have one practice Monday night then don’t hit the ice until Thursday night in Peterborough. That’s unreal awful. Minors have 3 practices because there staff made the effort to book extra icetime this week. They practice Sunday Tuesday and Wednesday. KP runs a terrible program and sault major is not even paying attention. The majors need a new coach, new program, to develop these players. Feel bad for these players.

  21. Leave names out of it this is your battle once again u are bashing players how about the two of u go head to head and we will put our money on u. I am sure both teams will have a good laugh this is now turning into a joke. SMC good team not triple AAA caliber sorry playoffs right around the corner for u as well. Good luck anything can happen in the playoffs Korah and Superior have some AAA players as well

  22. I think it’s time to close this page it is now sounding like the battle of the dads and to be quite honest sounding pathetic. Perhaps we should all put our money on you to see who wins this battle and put it towards charity. This now has nothing to do with anything its rather comical. To call any player pathetic in the first place is unacceptable and anybody with a brain and has enjoyed watching the team knows it’s not true. Secondly to discredit the players who play high school is also unacceptable as these players take their game seriously as well. All four high school teams have some quality players and I am sure the playoffs are going to be competitive. Time to stop bashing these young athletes u are truly giving the Soo a bad name I have friends all over Northern Ontario and they can’t believe some of these comments. Like I said put it to bed go and enjoy watching your son or daughter play regardless if it’s high school, house league or otherwise. Gordie we now know who u are and your son is a great player we have watched him play since he was a young boy. If he is truly happy on the team he is on there would be no need for the bitterness perhaps next year he will play at a higher level. Good luck to both teams this weekend in Peterborough u still have many supporters who wish u well.

  23. First of all calling any team or player pathetic is unacceptable. As we all know and a few have stated the Majors have some talented players who will most likely move forward next year no harm done. All four high schools have some quality players and perhaps we will see some of them play at a higher level next year. Gordie I would never blow your cover but I now know who u are u are definitely known to have the gift to gab always bragging about your two sons sometimes as the expense of others hope your son is enjoying his year playing for SMC I am
sure he is a key player there. Whether it’s high school, house league or otherwise it’s time to put the bitterness away I am sure everyone gets the point. Good Luck to
both teams in Peterborough this weekend u still have many supporters who wish u well.

  24. Ok stop the smc is better then the midget aaa. Cook , gavey , mannirino , ryckman could play for the midgets . Ryypo and brule are both to old so they don’t count. Is rouleau playing smc? He could obviously play too. But gnml is much better then the high school loop. Stop the non sense that they would beat them. Informed … maybe ur buddy is right . I’m sure they have kids who could play for the midgets. But the bottom end of that team isn’t very strong. Not like the last couple smc teams. They would loose 9 times out of 10 against the midgets. Anyways such a stupid argument. I feel for these kids on the midget team. They must read these comments. That’s gotta be tough on them. I’ve watched most of them play over the years. Not sure why this team is having such a hard time this year. A lot of good players. I think the older goalie on the team ( can’t remember his name ) is capable of stealing a few games in the playoffs. Ive always liked him as goalie. Even in aa I thought he had jr hockey potential. Anyways if that game vs smc ever happens let me know so I can make a few bucks off the guys who think smc would win. I’m joking btw.

  25. Good point noj alum and with players like Wood, Rebek, Praysnor, Mackin, and Morgan the AAA could be a real contender. Bottom line the others chose high school and I agree it’s time to give these kids a break. I was fortunate to have Hunter on one of my boys teams and I agree and he stole quite a few games last year in the AA league. Hopefully they turn it around personally with all this negativity I hope they do.
