Members of the Great North Midget Hockey League have reversed an earlier decision to deny entry to a minor midget team from Sault Ste. Marie and have now voted in favour of admittance for the 2017-2018 season.

HockeyNewsNorth.com has confirmed the addition of what will be a second Soo team in the GNMHL, joining the existing Soo Greyhounds major midgets.

Sault Major Hockey Association had appealed the initial GNMHL rejection of a proposed minor midget team. And Soo minor midget head coach Jamie Henderson — as passionate an individual as there is out there — put together a new proposal to the GNMHL that included more favourable travel schedules for other teams in the league.

With a new minor midget team in North Bay along with the latest one in the Soo, the GNMHL is slated to grow to a nine-team league for the 2017-2018 season.

The GNMHL has a 2017-2018 season scheduling meeting set for June 24.

As it now stands, the nine teams in the Great North will include minor midget and major midget squads from the Soo, North Bay and Sudbury as well as single entries from Kapuskasing, New Liskeard and Timmins.

What you think about “Minor midget team for Soo”

  1. Hopefully all the disgruntled 2001 players that Panco cut last year try out for his AAA midget team this year otherwise this minor team may have to fold due to numbers . Hearing a lot of the skilled 01s tried out for the St Mary’s high school team, and why wouldn’t they…low cost $1k-$2k to play includes all expenses like buses rooms jackets etc, better coaching, AAA high school tourneys, paid buses. Its too bad that Sault Major and the high school league couldn’t come to an agreement and let the kids play both leagues like the south. Yet another reason for those parents that can afford to send their kids away do so.

  2. Hopefully they don’t fill the roster with 2003 kids as I’ve heard talk about. It’d be nice to get back to a 4 team league in the NOHL.
