An inner-city Great North Midget Hockey League match tonight pitted the Soo Minor Thunderbirds up against the Soo Major Thunderbirds.

And it was the baby Birds who emerged victorious.

Gavin Ritacco, Jack Matier and Michael Beltrano scored solo goals to lead the Minor Thunderbirds to a 3-2 decision over the Major Thunderbirds.

Brock Santa Maria scored both goals for the Major Thunderbirds.

The Minor Thunderbirds were highly motivated for the match and had better scoring chances than the Major Thunderbirds, who received an outstanding performance from workhorse goalie Noah Zeppa.

Minor Thunderbirds head coach Jamie Henderson provided his take on the game.

“I thought the Majors came out hard early and played hard all night,” Henderson told Hockey News North. “We talked before and during the game about getting to the net because we know how tough it is to score on Noah. In the end we found a way to win in the third.”

The victory boosted the Minor Thunderbirds record to 5-7-3 in 15 Great North games while the Major Thunderbirds now have a 6-20-0 mark through 26 outings.
