Soo Major Thunderbirds and Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves will both take 1-0 leads in their respective Great North Midget Hockey League playoff series into games tonight.

The Soo is in New Liskeard for a slated 6:30 p.m. start at Don Shepherdson Memorial Arena while Sudbury is home to the Timmins Majors in a planned 8 p.m. opening face off at Garson Community Center Arena.

In their series opener, the Major Thunderbirds built on some big early saves from rookie goalie Noah Zeppa to eventually outlast the Cubs from New Liskeard 4-2 in a Thursday match in the Soo.

Sudbury, meanwhile, stole its series opener on the road in Timmins on Wednesday with a 4-2 verdict despite, by most accounts, being out-played by the Majors.

Both series are best two-out-of-three sets. If third-and-deciding games are needed, they will be played in New Liskeard and Sudbury, respectively, on Sunday afternoon.
