A pair of empty net goals iced a Great North Midget Hockey League season-opening victory for the Soo Major Midget Thunderbirds over the Timmins Majors.

Nick Jameus and Michael Chaffay scored with the Timmins net empty as the Soo completed a 4-1 triumph over the visitors in a Friday night match at GFL Memorial Gardens.

Jameus added an earlier goal as did Michael Barone and rookie goalie Noah Zeppa played extremely well in posting the win between the T-Bird twine.

A first period power play goal by Eric Daigle was the only scoring for Timmins.

Away from the Soo score sheet, affiliate player Tyler Dunbar, a minor midget, 2003 birth year defenseman, stood out with a strong outing from his blue-line post and rookie forward Brock Santa Maria showed considerable hustle.

The two teams play again today in a 12:30 p.m. start at John Rhodes Community Centre.
