Summer skates for 2002 birth-year players interested in playing for the new Soo minor midget entry in the Great North Midget Hockey League have been finalized.

Soo minor midget coach Jamie Henderson has advised that the summer-ice sessions will begin on Thursday, July 6 at 5 p.m. at John Rhodes Community Centre and continue until the end of August. Cost is $150 per player.

Meanwhile, actual tryout dates for the new Soo minor midget entry have been established and are as follows.

Sunday, July 16. Registration at 5:45 p.m. followed by fitness test at 6:00 p.m. and on-ice evaluation and skill development from 7:30-9:00 p.m.

Monday July 17. On ice evaluation and skill development from 9:30-11:00 p.m.

Thursday July 20. Summer ice from 5:00-6:00 p.m. with individual coach-player meetings to follow.

Tryout cost is $30 per player.

Henderson, who has considerable coaching and management experience from previous gigs with the Lake Superior State Lakers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League and St. Mary’s Knights of the Sault Ste. Marie High School Hockey League, has just returned from some intensive training of his own.

“I just finished 50 hours in a classroom at Hockey Canada’s High Performance coaching training the past two weekends in Toronto and I can tell you that I have never been more motivated to work with a group and the challenge that lies ahead,” Henderson relayed.
