Evan Nicholls will be in familiar surroundings this weekend when the Timmins Majors visit the Soo Jr. Greyhounds to begin the 2019-2020 Great North Midget Hockey League regular season.

The Timmins goalie spent last season minding the net for the erstwhile Soo Minor Thunderbirds of the Great North loop, posting a 6-4-3 record with a 4.05 goals against average.

Nicholls, who stands in at 6-foot-4, signed with Timmins in May of this year after attending the Majors spring tryout camp, where he impressed head coach Brandon Perry.

The 2003 birth-year puck-stopper played for head coach Jamie Henderson of the Soo minor midgets last season. Henderson now coaches the Jr. Greyhound major midgets and is looking forward to seeing his former goalie this weekend with Timmins in town for a three-game set.

“Evan is a good goalie and a great kid and we have kept in touch,” Henderson noted on a recent edition of the Hockey North Show, which airs on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. on local radio station ESPN 1400.

“I am sure that Evan will be more than pumped up to come into the Soo and try to lead Timmins to victory,” Henderson added.

The Soo and Timmins begin the three-game series with a match tonight at 8:00. The two teams then meet again on Saturday night at 7:00 and Sunday afternoon at 1:00 with all three contests slated for John Rhodes Community Center.
