Today’s Great North Midget Hockey League tour goes from Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury to North Bay to Kapuskasing to Timmins.

WOLVES OWN HOUNDS

Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves have been a powerhouse through the first 8 games of the 2017-2018 season.

Not only do the Nickel Capital Wolves have a perfect record of 8-0-0 but they have out-scored the opposition 58-15.

Of note, the Nickel Capital Wolves have owned their major midget rival Soo Greyhounds to date.

The Nickel Capitals Wolves have already defeated the Greyhounds three times — by 7-2, 6-1 and 8-0 scores — and all three games have been played in the Soo.

Among the high-performance forwards for the Nickel Capitals Wolves thus far are Joe Mazur with 6 goals, 11 assists, 17 points and Thomas Vlahos with 10 goals, 6 assists, 16 points.

The Greyhounds have a 5-4-0 record to start the season.

Forward Parker Morgan tops the Hounds scoring chart with 7 goals, 2 assists, 9 points.

TRAPPERS IN TUNE

As the Sudbury major midgets are 8-0-0, North Bay Trappers have been no slouch through their first 6 games.

Veteran coach Guy Blanchard has his Trappers off to a 5-0-1 start.

Veteran forward Nick Davis leads the Trappers in scoring with 8 goals, 2 assists, 10 points.

HOME SWEET HOLMES

Second-year forward Austin Holmes of the Timmins Majors is having a nice start to the season with 4 goals, 4 assists, 8 points in 7 seven games.

Holmes has even taken his game to the junior level.

Pressed into service by the Timmins Rock as an affiliate player on the weekend, Holmes made his Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League debut with a goal and an assist in his hometown team’s 6-3 win over the French River Rapids.

NET GAINS

Among the strong goal-tending efforts on the major midget side, Dylan Dallaire of the Timmins Majors and Sebastian Plamandon of the Kapuskasing Flyers have been earning their keep.

Dallaire has a 2-1-0 record and a 1.99 goals against average for Timmins. Overall, the Majors have a record of 2-5-0 which means without Dallaire in net, Timmins is 0-4-0 — and with a 6.50 goals against average.

As for Plamandon, he has stood out for Kapuskasing with a 2-2-0 record and 2.69 goals against average. Overall, the Flyers have a record of 3-4-1 which means without Plamandon in net, Kapuskasing is 1-2-1 — with a 4.00 goals against average.

Sault Ste. Marie product David Campbell leads the North Bay Trappers with 3 goals, 2 assists, 5 points…Speedster Justin Mauro leads the Soo Thunderbirds with 3 goals, 2 assists, 5 points…Hunter Brazier leads the Sudbury Wolves with 4 points, all of which are assists.

What you think about “Up and down the Great North”

  1. Watched most of the games last weekend in the Soo. Can’t believe how strong Sudbury is compared to the other two teams. They don’t take many penalties, they never stop competing and actually PLAY hockey without the crap. Compared to the watching the North Bay minors play, it was actually nice to see a team play hockey the way it is suppose to be.
I was expecting the Sudbury team to be arrogant and a bunch of a**holes because all I ever heard about this team and staff is that its all about them and not players. Could not have been more wrong. There is not doubt they are playing hard to score goals but they are playing hockey. This team seems to be coached well and they seem to be motivated. Just hope our Soo players can see that and try and play like that.

Randy, I’ve watched a bunch of NOJHL games, what would be the chances of the Sudbury team beating some of the bad teams there. I wonder if they would ever allow that to happen or they would probably would not take that chance

  2. Sorry to make a long story short Plamondon is not a Timmins boy. Was never wanted as a Timmins boy. Plamondon is a Hearst boy.
