First up for the MWJHL

The Midwest Jr. Hockey League has unveiled its first players of the week for the new 2014-2015 season.

The awards are voted on by MWJHL coaches, general managers and league staff.

And the winners are:

Forward of the Week: Adam Jonak, MC Monarchs

Jonak, a 1994 birth date from the Czech Republic, notched 12 points in two wins last weekend in a home-and-home series against the Berkley Bruins and leads the MWJHL in scoring.

Starting off the season with a goal and an assist in Friday’s 4-0 win, Jonak followed that up with four goals and six assists for a 10-point game as the Monarchs took a 12-3 win Saturday night.

Acquired from the Bruins in the off-season, Jonak also played in 2013-2014 for the Traverse City Hounds.

Defenseman of the Week: Jarrad Vroman, MC Monarchs

A second-year veteran of the MWJHL, Vroman tallied a goal and seven assists (two on the power play) in the Monarchs two-game sweep of Berkley last weekend.

A 1997 birth date who skated last season for the Detroit Fighting Irish, the Lincoln Park, Mich., native posted five goals and 10 points in 39 games.

Goaltender of the Week: Nic Berlingieri, Soo Firehawks/Tyler Skulley, MC Monarchs

Berlingieri and Skulley, both two-year veterans of the MWJHL, each recorded shutouts in their respective season debuts over the weekend.

Berlingieri, a 1995 birth date from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., stopped all 38 Michigan Ice Dogs shots in the Soo’s 4-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

For Skulley, who played in 2013-2014 for the Fighting Irish, the 1994-born Walled Lake, Mich. product had a 35-save shutout on Friday and then stopped 21 of 24 shots for the win in 45 minutes of work Saturday night.

Rookie of the Week: Trevor Pode, MC Monarchs

A 1996-born forward from St. Clair Shores, Mich., Pode produced six points over the weekend.

Pode opened the weekend with a goal in the Monarchs win against Berkley Friday night and then struck for two goals and three assists in the win Saturday night.
