MC, Detroit are tops in MWJHL

MC Monarchs and Detroit Fighting Irish remain 1-2 in the Midwest Jr. Hockey League standings following games from Saturday night.

Both teams take unbeaten records into games today.

MC 7, SOO 5

The Monarchs boosted their record to 4-0 after rallying from a three-goal deficit to beat the Soo Firehawks 7-5 at Fraser Hockeyland.

MWJHL scoring leader Adam Jonak (eight goals, 12 assists, 20 points) scored once and added five helpers and Trevor Pode netted a hat trick in the latest victory for MC, which got 39 saves from goalie Marquise Almeida.

Cody Therrian had two goals and two assists to lead the Soo.

The teams play again today at 11:45 a.m. at Fraser Hockeyland.

DETROIT 10, ALPENA 3

Visiting Detroit improved its record to 3-0 with a 10-3 cuffing of the Alpena Flyers.

Shawn Mott struck for three goals and an assist to pace the Fighting Irish.

The two teams meet again this afternoon at 2:05 p.m. in Alpena.

  1. Plesantly surprised at how good a hockey team that the Monarchs have.
    The Joanak kid is worth the $$ admission $$. Good job Coach and to you as well Mark for putting such a good hockey team in place.
    Looking forward to the Monarchs playing the Fighting Irish coming up this week ahead.
