MC moves to 3-0 in MWJHL
Another day, another win for the new kids on the Midwest Jr. Hockey League block.
The expansion MC Monarchs won for the third time in as many starts on Friday, a 4-3 win over the visiting Soo Firehawks.
Two other games were played in the MWJHL on Friday and three more are slated for today.
TRAVERSE CITY 8, BERKLEY 2
Cam Givens score two goals and added two assists as the visiting Traverse City Hounds topped the winless Berkley Bruins 8-2.
Patrick Rogowski and Cam Fisher tallied a goal and two assists each, while Josh Hill and Kevin Cole notched a goal plus a helper apiece to pace TC.
Jacob Gillis and Greg Meuser posted a goal each for the Hounds and Stan Swiderek contributed a pair of assists in support of goalie David Krejcik’s 26 saves.
For the Bruins, Tim Muhsman had a goal and an assist and Cristian Purdom also scored.
The two teams play again today at 4:30 p.m.
MC 4, SOO 3
At Fraser Hockeyland, Adam Jonak’s dramatic, second goal of the game at 19:59 of the third period lifted coach Jason McCrimmon’s unbeaten Monarchs past the Firehawks 4-3.
Cody Anderson had tied the game for the Soo with his second goal of the contest at 15:48 of the third period.
Andrew Krolikowski and Alec Domin added solo goals for the Monarchs and Trevor Pode tallied three assists in front of MC goalie Tyler Skulley, who kicked out 26 shots.
Dustin Brown also scored for the Firehawks and Matt MacLaren picked up a pair of assists. Nic Berlingieri made 34 saves in the Soo net.
Game 2 of the weekend series is today at 3 p.m. at Fraser Hockeyland.
DETROIT 4, MICHIGAN 3
At Farmington Hills Ice Arena, the visiting Detroit Fighting Irish nipped the Michigan Ice Dogs 4-3 after a six-round shootout.
Chase Tackett’s goal in the sixth round was the difference-maker after Detroit goalie George Hill stopped the last five shooters he faced after allowing a goal to begin the shootout.
Hill made 43 saves in regulation and overtime.
Ken Winter scored twice for the Fighting Irish and Nolan Jakrzewski added the other.
Marc Rotondo and Ryan McNulty registered a goal and an assist apiece for the Ice Dogs, while Spencer Godin also scored and Brent Young tacked on two assists.
Detroit continues on the road tonight at 7:05 p.m. against the Alpena Flyers.
