Soo, MC win; Irish gets a point

Soo Firehawks and MC Monarchs posted Friday night victories while first-place Detroit Fighting Irish gained a point on the road in Midwest Jr. Hockey League action.

DECATUR 6, DETROIT 5

Playing at home, the Blaze needed six rounds of shootout to edge the visiting Fighting Irish.

Garret Maged tallied the winner in the shootout.

For the first-place Fighting Irish, which boosted its record to 15-6-3, Jacob Hernandez found range twice — giving him 17 on the season — and Cody Dombrowski, Chase Tackett and Steve Sewell scored solo goals.

Fighting Irish goalie George Hill came on in relief of starter Kory Dombrowski and turned in a solid effort in defeat.

SOO 5, ALPENA 4

Matt MacLaren’s goal 4:29 into overtime lifted the Firehawks past the visiting Flyers.

Daniel Bachynsky scored two goals and added an assist for the Firehawks and Anthony Laaksonen and Stephen Hillock tallied once each.

The Firehawks are in Traverse City tonight to take on the 14-0-1 Hounds in a 7:30 match.

MC 9, MICHIGAN 2

Tory Shand and Anthony (Wojo) Wojciechowski each tallied two goals as the Monarchs routed the Ice Dogs 9-2.

Goalie Tyler Skulley made 41 saves as MC improved its record to 16-8.
