Reputable junior coach Dan Daikawa has a new gig.

Brookings Blizzard of the North American Hockey League have hired Daikawa as head coach.

Daikawa heads to Brookings after one season as an assistant coach with the NAHL’s Minnesota Wilderness.

Before going to Minnesota, Daikawa was coach-general manager of the now-defunct Jamestown Ironmen for two seasons.

Daikawa coached Jamestown to the NAHL’s North Division playoff championship in 2012-2013, upending the Soo Eagles in the finals.

In going to Brookings, Daikawa takes over a Blizzard team that finished last in the NAHL’s Central Division in 2013-2014 with a record of 18-34-8.

Overall, Brookings finished with the second-worst record in the 24-team NAHL in 2013-2014.

What you think about “Dan is the man in Brookings”

  1. I was hoping that Dan would somehow eventually end up coaching Johnstown. The man knows how to build a hard working, winning hockey team. Brookings got a great coach.

    1. Happy for Dan that he is once again a head coach. His Jamestown team of 2012-2013 mirrored Dan’s hardworking ways and his sandpaper personality. No doubt that he will transform the Brookings team into a lunch-pail brigade.

      1. You are very lucky to get Dan. I am from MN and the Wilderness. I am sorry to see Dan go. He was a great inspiration for the boys and got along with them very well. But being an Ass’t coach, it was only a matter of time before he left us. Our loss!! He has a great family as well. Good luck Blizzards!!

  2. This is an excellent hire for Brookings – I kind of wished that Lake State would have at least looked at this mans resume. He’s a winner, then so is Joe Shawhan. Even if Whitten is a flop its no skin off Dunbars nose, she can just say, hey I just followed Comley’s recommendation.
As for Daikawa he gets the job done, the folks at Brookings did their homework, here, well, not so much, but only time will tell.

  3. Congratulations Dan! Glad to see you landed on your feet as a head coach once again. Was only a matter of time!
