The Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League has its first 30-goal scorer of the 2017-2018 campaign in the person of Soo Thunderbirds forward Nick Smith.

The skilled second-year skater with smooth hands of silk reached the 30-goal mark on Sunday when the Thunderbirds cuffed the visiting Espanola Express.

The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Smith, who has a 1999 birth date, figures to soon have company in the 30-goal club.

Trailing Smith on the NOJHL goal-scoring chart are Christian Bardarson of the Soo Eagles with 29, Harrison Israels of the Powassan Voodoos with 28 and three players with 27 — Caleb Serre of the Blind River Beavers and the Cochrane Crunch duo of Kyle Herbster and Austin Stauffer. Also closing in on 30 is Tyler Fyfe of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners with 26 goals.
