Beau and the Voodoos

Move one good coach on. Move another good coach in. Powassan Voodoos of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League have moved quickly to replace head coach Scott Wray with the equally-reputable Beau Moyer.

With Wray having recently left the NOJHL champion Voodoos for an assistant coach position with the Ontario Hockey League North Battalion, his replacement in Powassan is the 36-year old Moyer, fresh from an impressive gig with the minor midget Vaughan Kings of the Greater Toronto Hockey League.

“It’s going to be a great challenge coaching the Voodoos,” said Moyer, a North Bay native.

“I have been looking for the opportunity to coach at the junior level for the past three years and coming home makes it that much more special,” Moyer continued. “I’m hoping to add to a program that has a great foundation through all the hard work that Scott Wray and (Voodoos general manager) Chris Dawson have done the past three years. It is a challenge that I am extremely excited about.”

Dawson is quite familiar with Moyer.

“You can never argue about Beau’s passion for the game,” noted Dawson.

“He’s got a reputation for developing players and that’s what we do here in Powassan. I think many members of our staff, ownership and even the players already are excited to get going with Beau behind the bench,” Dawson added.

Moyer knows all about player development as three of his former Vaughan skaters were selected in the first round of the 2017 OHL draft, including forward Nick Porco, a Sault Ste. Marie product who went fourth overall to the Saginaw Spirit.

In moving to the NOJHL and Powassan — the Voodoos are an affiliate of the OHL Battalion — Moyer will give up the scouting position that he has held with the Kingston Frontenacs since 2011.
