Espanola Express of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League has gone big to sign 6-foot-4, 215-pound defenceman Jace Pitawanakwat.

HockeyNewsNorth.com has confirmed the Express addition of the 2000 birth year blue-liner, who played with the North York Rangers AAA midgets of the Greater Toronto Hockey League in 2016-2017.

The big defender shared some of the aspects of his overall game.

“I’ve been labelled a stay-at-home defenceman but I want to change that. Now I am always looking for opportunities moving up the ice,” said Pitawanakwat, who added that he plans to utilize his speed, shot and vision to try to be more of an offensive force.

Still, the incoming NOJHL rookie knows where his strengths lie.

“My strengths are my physicality and using my size to shut down the offense of the opposing team,” relayed Pitawanakwat.

Espanola general manager Chad Clarke said the Express has high hopes for the rugged rearguard.

“Jace dominated at our spring camp and I had the opportunity to watch him in game situations this summer and he continued to impress each time I watched him play,” Clarke began. “We have high hopes for Jace to have a break-out year and become a dominant defenceman in our league.”
