Steven Khull put the puck in the net two minutes and 22 seconds into overtime as the visiting Blind River Beavers edged the Soo Thunderbirds 4-3 in a fast-paced, well-played Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League match on Friday night.

Khull’s conversion — which was a power play marker — lifted Blind River to its third straight win to begin the 2017-2018 NOJHL regular season.

The Thunderbirds, who were playing their home opener, now have a record of 2-1-1 on the season.

Caleb Serre, Owen Robinson and Ryan Cullen had earlier goals for Blind River, which took a 3-1 lead into the third period only to have the Soo battle back to tie the game and force the extra frame.

Second-year forward Nick Smith was a going concern throughout the contest for the Thunderbirds and scored a goal and an assist.

Noah Sollinger and Alex Costa also found range for the Soo.

Beavers rookie goalie Garrett Boyonoski, formerly of the Soo Greyhounds of the Great North Midget Hockey League, made 32 saves between the Blind River pipes.
