Border battle bandwagon

Pace-setting Soo Thunderbirds will face off against the cross-border Soo Eagles in a home-and-home weekend series that begins tonight at 7:30 at Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Soo.

The two teams will line up against each other again on Saturday at 7:00 at John Rhodes Community Centre.

The Thunderbirds are perched atop the West Division of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League with 44 points from a record of 22-5-0. Coach John Parco’s high-flying Thunderbirds have won eight straight games.

With 25 points from a record of 12-16-1, the Michigan-based Eagles are in fourth place in the NOJHL West.

The two teams have met three times this season with the Thunderbirds winning all three via 7-5, 2-1 and 5-1 scores.

On the goal-scoring chart, Lucas Theriault leads the Thunderbirds with 20 tallies followed by Nick Smith with 17, Noah Boman and Kaidan McDonald with 12 apiece and Tyler Malpass, Avery Rebek and Gage Stephney with seven each. Stephney has scored his seven goals in just nine games since joining the Thunderbirds from the Greater Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

Caleb Wood leads the Eagles in goals with 14 while Kyle Quinn and Brendan Blair have 10 each, Riley Jensen has nine and Raf Praysner has 10.
