Crunch in cruise control

Handing the reigning champion Powassan Voodoos their first home ice loss since February of last season — covering eight games, playoffs included — Cochrane Crunch is on a roll of its own.

Cochrane’s 5-2 win over Powassan on the weekend was the third straight win for the Crunch and improved its record to 5-3-0 through the early going of the 2017-2018 Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League season.

In the three wins — victories over Blind River Beavers, French River Rapids and Powassan — Cochrane has allowed only five goals against as offensive-minded coach Ryan Leonard has been preaching and screeching team defense.

Offensively, over the eight games to date, Cochrane has been led by the all-American trio of Austin Stauffer, Kyle Podwika and Kyle Herbster, who have combined for 25 points.
