A standout in the classroom and a high-end defenseman on the ice, Sault Ste. Marie’s Brandon Grandinetti is headed to new heights.

The 1996 birth-year defender, who played three seasons for the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League before heading off to play for the Kitchener Dutchmen of the Greater Ontario Jr. Hockey League in 2016-2017, has committed to play for the University of Waterloo Warriors effective the 2017-2018 campaign.

While with the Thunderbirds, Grandinetti — who defined leadership and character — earned the NOJHL’s RBC scholastic player-of-the-year award and was a member of the Canadian Jr. Hockey League’s all-academic/all-Canadian champions team.

He began his studies at U of Waterloo last fall, majoring in kinesiology while starring for the Dutchmen of the GOJHL as an assistant captain and second leading scorer among Kitchener defensemen.
