Historic win for Espanola
It took 31 games spanning four previous seasons and this one but the Espanola Express has defeated the Soo Thunderbirds for the first time in franchise history.
Diego Pasula tallied twice, Matais Salem had three assists and Joel Rainville made 33 saves as visiting Espanola skated past the Soo 5-2 in Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League action from Saturday.
According to files from NOJHL historian David Harrison, this was the 31st meeting between Espanola and the Soo and the first-ever victory for the Express.
The win for Espanola improved its record to 4-7-1 for the season while the Soo drops to 4-7-3. The Express is now just two points behind the Thunderbirds in the West Division standings with two games in hand.
