Timmins Rock of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League and Timmins Majors of the Great North Midget Hockey League are both in action at home this weekend.

The Rock, with a record of 2-3-0, plays the unbeaten, 4-0-0 Blind River Beavers tonight at McIntyre Arena.

Rock coach Corey Beer is quite aware of what the Beavers are bringing to town.

“Their back end has a lot of size and speed as well,” Beer told Postmedia. “These are not slow, plodding guys. They can move and cause damage both defensively and offensively, so we have to be very cognizant of that fact.”

The Majors, meanwhile, will play host to the New Liskeard Cubs on Saturday night in the second half of a home-and-home series.

Saturday’s match will be the 2017-2018 home opener for the Majors, who have a record of 1-2-0 following a three-game road trip to Sault Ste. Marie last weekend.

The Majors have a chance to equal and even surpass last season’s win total of two when they face off against New Liskeard tonight and Saturday.

Majors coach Brandon Perry put his team through what he called “a really hard practice” preparatory to the weekend set with New Liskeard.

“We did a lot of skating, a lot of starting and stopping. Then, we played some small-area games and did a lot of battling in the corners — just trying to get our work ethic to where we think it needs to be,” Perry told Postmedia.
