How sweep it is!

It lived up to its hype, the border battle did, with four close, evenly-matched contests. But the same team won all four games as Soo Eagles completed an improbable sweep of Soo Thunderbirds tonight.

Before a frenzied crowd of more than 1,230 fanatics at Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Soo, the Eagles finalized a four-game playoff purge of the visiting Thunderbirds with a spine-tingling 4-2 triumph.

It was a sweet cap to the series for the Eagles, who finished in fourth place in the West Division of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League during the regular season, well back of the pace-setting Thunderbirds.

To add a bit of icing to the cake, a pair of Canadian Soo products — forward Jake Palmerio and defenseman Nick Trecroce — put a slice of their own into the triumph for the Michigan-based Eagles.

Palmerio scored once — the game winner — and added an assist and Trecroce came through with a helper of his own.

The Eagles victory ended any aspirations that the Thunderbirds had for a third straight NOJHL championship.

Chris Lutz and Chris Murphy also scored for the Eagles in support of goalie Kade Phipps.

Alec Allen and Wyatt Villalta replied for the Thunderbirds.

The Eagles had won each of the first three games of the series by one goal, including a double-overtime victory.

What you think about “How sweep it is!”

  1. I have said it from day one to keep your eye on Jake Palmerio. Not only did he play at an OHL level he scores the game winner to sink the great T Birds. You have to love playoff hockey. Regular season stats mean nothing when 4th place knocks off 1st place in 4 straight.

  2. The Eagles just bent the T-Birds over and had no mercy on them. That little 23 from The Eagles is a grey player in these playoffs. They’re missing Makkonen’s presence a little but he’s earned his way to a higher level. Another standout player for me was actually from the T-Birds, Stephney #15. Plays the game on the edge and with a lot of grit. Love playoff hockey! Way to go Eagles !!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Loved watching the skill and determined attitude of jake palmerio in the thrilling playoffs. Lots of goals and just good work from him. He is fast and furious player. Certainly ready for the next level. Way to go jake.
