A pair of games were on the slate as 2019-2020 regular season play in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League began on Thursday.

POWASSAN 3, RAYSIDE BALFOUR 2

David Bowen made 42 saves but it wasn’t quite enough as the Rayside Balfour Canadians, playing at home, dropped a 3-2 decision to the Powassan Voodoos.

On the other side, Owen Say had a 31-save outing for Powassan.

Rayside Balfour head coach Dan Cuomo noted the difference in the one-goal game.

“Powassan is a good team, a bit of a veteran squad, and we made some minor hockey mistakes and that happens,” Cuomo told the Sudbury Star. “We have to learn that when the puck goes through the neutral zone, it has to go up the boards, that pass has to happen there, because our cross-ice passes were getting picked off.”

COCHRANE 10, FRENCH RIVER 0

Stephen Minichiello scored four goals and Matthew Minichiello had five assists as the Cochrane Crunch blanked the visiting French River Rapids.

Zach Wickson made 26 saves to earn the shutout for Cochrane.
