Defenseman Dawson Garcia has been obtained by the Rayside-Balfour Canadians of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League from the Ancaster Avalanche of the Greater Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

The rough-and-tumble, 1999 birth-year defender had 23 points and 71 penalty minutes in 43 games with Ancaster in 2016-2017.

Rayside-Balfour president Adrian Gedye told HockeyNewsNorth.com that Garcia was recommended to the Canadians by their head scout Zack Schipper.

“Zack watched (Garcia) play several times last season and loved his offensive abilities, toughness and compete level,” Gedye relayed.

Schipper likes the package that Garcia will bring to Rayside-Balfour.

“Together (with Gedye and coach-general manager Dave Clancy) we feel that Garcia can put up some big numbers for us and provide some experience and leadership also,” noted Schipper.

“One of the areas we wanted to address in the off season was signing a couple of offensive defensemen and we think Garcia will add that element to our team,” added Schipper.
