Ryan Smith, an Ontario Hockey League prospect of the Sudbury Wolves, made a triumphant return to the French River Rapids of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League on Saturday night.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound winger with a 2002 birth date scored once and added an assist as French River eked out a 3-2 overtime victory over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.

Smith was making his 2019-2020 season debut with French River after being acquired earlier in the week from the Collingwood Colts of the Ontario Jr. Hockey League. He scored 13 goals in 53 games as a rookie for French River in 2018-2019.

Smith signed a standard OHL contract with Sudbury just before the start of the current season and Wolves general manager Rob Papineau is closely watching the progress of the young forward. Smith was taken by the Wolves in the 11th round of the 2018 OHL priority selections draft.
