High scoring forward Nick Smith is returning to the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League for the 2018-2019 season, Hockey News North has confirmed.

Smith, who has a 1999 birth date, was slated to join the St. Catharines Falcons of the Greater Ontario Jr. Hockey League and attend Brock University but has since opted to stay home to play hockey and continue his education in Sault Ste. Marie.

A true team player and team leader, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Smith topped the T-Bird scoring chart with 35 goals, 34 assists, 69 points in 55 regular season games in 2017-2018. He then added 3 goals, 4 assists, 7 points in 13 playoff outings as the Thunderbirds made it to the West Division finals before losing to the Rayside Balfour Canadians.

His return to the NOJHL and the Thunderbirds gives the Soo one of the most skilled players in the West Division.
