It has been reduced to a best-of-three series. Playing at home on Thursday, Soo Thunderbirds came through with a clutch 8-2 verdict over the Rayside Balfour Canadians to even their Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League playoff series at two games each.

Game 5 in the best-of-seven West Division final is slated for Sunday at 4 p.m. at Chelmsford Arena, the home of the Canadians.

The T-Birds unleashed five unanswered goals in the third period of Thursday’s game to fly to victory.

Forward Tyler Malpass had two goals and an assist for the Soo, which held a resounding 51-16 edge in shots on goal.

Forwards Noah Solinger, Kaidan McDonald, Lucas Theriault, Nick Smith, Mark Tassone and Braden Robbins also scored for the Soo while defensemen Robert Calisti and Steven Bellini had four assists each.

Kyle Liinamaa and Brady Maltais replied for the Canadians, who finished atop the West Division standings during the regular season, just ahead of the second-place T-Birds.
