Bertuzzi hockey family, Act 3

They have family and hockey roots that are deep within the gritty northern Ontario town of Sudbury. But at the Ontario Hockey League level it is the Guelph Storm that continues to serve as home to the Bertuzzi family.

It began back in 1991 when Guelph used its first-round draft pick to select hulking winger Todd Bertuzzi from the Sudbury midgets. Bertuzzi would go on to play four OHL seasons in Guelph, capped by a 54-goal campaign that preceded more than 1,200 games in the National Hockey League featuring 800-plus points and more than 1,600 penalty minutes.

Then came the 2011 OHL draft when Guelph made a safe pick in the fourth round when it selected high-energy, hard-driven winger Tyler Bertuzzi. A nephew of Todd, Tyler would go on to play four OHL seasons in Guelph, capped by a 48-goal campaign and being a second-round NHL draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings. At age 22, Tyler is now considered one of the Red Wings better prospects and has already made his NHL debut.

The latest Bertuzzi connection to Guelph and the OHL came at the 2017 draft when the Storm picked 6-foot-1, 190-pound centre Tag Bertuzzi in the first round, second overall. Tag is Todd’s son and a first cousin to Tyler– and just recently made his OHL commitment to Guelph official by signing with the Storm.

Meanwhile, there is another Bertuzzi connection to junior hockey besides Todd, Tyler and Tag.

Tyler’s dad, Adrian Gedye, is not only an established player agent with Uptown Sports Management but is the owner of the Rayside-Balfour Canadians of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

What you think about “Bertuzzi hockey family, Act 3”

  1. Great article Randy! I had the opportunity to watch Tag a lot the last 2 seasons and he will continue the family tradition of flourishing in a great hockey organization in Guelph.

  2. Great family-hockey story. Love to hear about the Bertuzzi (s) and Canada’s game! I have followed Todd’s career as a player and I am very excited to follow Tyler’s and Tag’s hockey journeys. Hoping to see Tyler in the Red Wing lineup next season!!!

  3. Hope Tag has the same impact on the Storm as the two prior ones did. Love your new role Randy as northern correspondent for the Guelph Storm.

  4. Todd and Tyler would get there style of play from Todd’s dad who legend has it was a real tough SOB when he played Senior hockey in Sudbury.

  5. Does anyone know why Tyler uses his mom’s last name instead of his dad’s? His brothers use their dad’s last name. Just confused.
