Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League have confirmed the signing of big defenseman Marcus Gretz, who was their second-round pick, 23rd overall, at the 2017 minor midget draft.

The Firebirds traded up to get Gretz, a Macomb, Michigan product who was being heavily-recruited by a number of Division 1, National Collegiate Athletic Association schools and who had made an earlier, verbal commitment to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

“This is a significant signing for our club,” said Firebirds general manager Barclay Branch. “Marcus is a big, elite, mobile defenseman who has an excellent mind for the game. He is an excellent human being and a great person off the ice who fits everything we’re looking for.”

Gretz, from his end, said he is thrilled at the opportunity to play in the OHL and to be able to do so in Flint, which is about 65 miles from where his family resides.
