Sault Ste. Marie product Mario Culina has his first win in just his second start as a member of the Sudbury Wolves.

The overage goalie, acquired by the Wolves off Ontario Hockey League waivers from the Windsor Spitfires last week, made 33 saves as Sudbury upended the visiting Kitchener Rangers 4-2 on Sunday.

It was Culina’s second outing with the Wolves. He made 32 saves in a 4-0 loss to the Peterborough Petes on Friday.

Wolves head coach Cory Stillman told the Sudbury Star that Culina “played very well” in the win over Kitchener.

“He made timely saves, looked calm out there,” Stillman said of Culina. “He also played well his first game with us.”

As good as he played in the win over Kitchener, Culina deferred credit to his Sudbury teammates.

“The defensive zone, we cleared a lot of things up,” said Culina. “We eliminated high-end chances, like the two-on-one and breakaways. They didn’t get too many of those. If we clear that up then we have a good chance at winning hockey games.

“It’s always good when the defense steps up and blocks the high-end shots. It makes my job easier,” Culina added.

Through two games with the Wolves, Culina — who began the 2017-2018 season with the Ryerson Rams of Ontario University Athletics — has a 1-1 record, 3.00 goals against average and .915 save percentage.

As for the Wolves, they now have 22 points from a record of 8-16-4 and are in ninth place in the OHL’s Eastern Conference.
