Sault Ste. Marie product Mario Culina is headed to the National Hockey League rookie camp of the Carolina Hurricanes, Hockey News North has learned.

Culina’s agent, Adrian Gedye of Uptown Hockey Management, confirmed that the 1997 birth year goalie has been invited to the Carolina camp, which will take place from June 26 to June 30.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Culina is fresh from a superb stint with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League.

Acquired by Kitchener from the Sudbury Wolves for an eighth-round draft pick at the January 9, 2018 OHL trade deadline, Culina immediately took over as the Rangers no. 1 goalie.

Culina had a record of 13-6-1 with a 2.63 goals against average and .919 save percentage to finish up the 2017-2018 regular season with the Rangers. He then led Kitchener through three rounds of the Western Conference playoffs with an 11-5-2 record, 2.79 goals against average and .917 save percentage.
