Eyes of Soo-based OHL scouts

Sault Ste. Marie-based scouts Jimmy Mancuso of the Guelph Storm and Mike Oliverio of the Flint Firebirds are no doubt doing their homework — and then some — on the top two prospects from the Great North Midget Hockey League for the 2017 Ontario Hockey League draft.

Soo Greyhounds forward Camaryn Baber and North Bay Trappers defenseman Payton Vescio are projected to go within the top three rounds of the 2017 OHL draft. And Mancuso and Oliverio may have an evaluation advantage on the pair based on their Soo location.

Meanwhile, according to more than one source linked to the upcoming OHL draft, both Baber and Vescio could go as high as late second round or somewhere in the third round — depending on their performance over the balance of the 2016-2017 season.

By the way, I have seen Baber and Vescio play multiple times and one word comes to mind to describe them both — outstanding.

As an aside, I would include the name of the OHL’s Soo Greyhounds local scout alongside Mancuso and Oliverio but I am thinking that Nick Della Penta must watch the games in a secret hiding place where no one can see him.

What you think about “Eyes of Soo-based OHL scouts”

  1. It is funny that I see Nick at a lot of games . We must be in the wrong places. But you are correct Baber and Vescio are good prospects with a few more besides them that will get drafted.

  2. “Mr. Invisible” could not even find Owen Headrick when Erie drafted Owen in the 13-th Round. Where were you Nickey ??????????

  3. If I was a betting man, I would say both are 3rd rounders but Peterborough tournament and ohl cup can change things.
