Small-sized centre Mathieu Foget is a big reason why the surging Ottawa 67’s are on the verge of securing an Ontario Hockey League playoff position.

The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Foget has 5 goals, 7 assists, 12 points in Ottawa’s last 5 games during which time the 67’s have posted a record of 3-0-2 to take over sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

With three games to play in the regular-season, Ottawa has a six-point lead on the ninth-place North Bay Battalion and has all but secured a playoff spot.

Foget, to be sure, has been a major factor for the 67’s, who are 5-3-2 over their last 10 games to climb from ninth place to sixth in the Eastern Conference.

Since joining the 67’s from the Merrimack College Warriors of the Division 1, National Collegiate Athletic Association at mid season, Foget has 10 goals, 21 assists, 31 points in 29 games in an Ottawa uniform.

Foget — who has a 1997 birth date and is a top candidate to be an overage skater with the 67’s next season — did not make an immediate impact after leaving the NCAA for the OHL and signing with Ottawa as a free agent.

In his first 11 games with the 67’s, Foget did not score a goal and had just 5 points, all assists.

But in the 18 games since, Foget — who played of his minor hockey in Ottawa before joining the Gloucester Rangers of the Central Canada Hockey League — has been on fire for Ottawa with 10 goals, 16 assists, 26 points.

Suffice to say that of all the players that 67’s coach-general manager Jeff Brown has added since the start of this season, Foget ranks high in the impact category.
