A first-team all-star goalie in the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League in 2015-2016, Garrett Forrest has had a dream-come-true start to his Ontario Hockey League career.

The former Powassan Voodoos standout pitched a 27-save shutout on Saturday as the Flint Firebirds blanked the visiting Owen Sound Attack 2-0.

A 19-year old OHL rookie, Forrest’s OHL rights were acquired by Flint from the North Bay Battalion just prior to the start of the 2016-2017 season.

According to Firebirds play-by-play announcer Dominic Hennig, Forrest was at his best just past the nine-minute mark of the third period when he made three consecutive “massive saves” with Flint clinging to a 1-0 lead. Shortly after, the Firebirds made it 2-0 and Forrest continued his shutout netminding en route to being named the game’s first star.

Flint, which missed the Western Conference playoffs in 2015-2016, now has a record of 2-1 to start the 2016-2017 campaign.

Both Flint victories have come via the shutout as Matthew Menna recorded the whitewash for the Firebirds in a 4-0 season-opening win over the Saginaw Spirit.
