NHL scouts fond of Hounds

Soo Greyhounds continue to draft and develop players who get the attention of the National Hockey League’s Central Scouting staff.

Sault Ste. Marie’s Ontario Hockey League team has had seven players selected by NHL clubs over the past two years — and three more are already under watch for the 2017 pro draft.

As it plans ahead for the 2017 NHL draft — which is slated to be held on June 23-24 at the United Center in Chicago — NHL Central Scouting has prepared a so-called watch list that includes 290 prospects, including 34 from the OHL.

Of the 34 OHLers who are being projected for selection at the 2017 NHL draft, three are from the Greyhounds — 1998 birth-year defenseman Mac Hollowell, 1999 birth-year defenseman Anthony DeMeo and 1999 birth-year forward Morgan Frost.

Hollowell was a distant 12th-round pick of the Hounds at the 2014 OHL draft. DeMeo in the third round, and Frost in the fourth round, were taken by the Hounds at the 2015 OHL draft.

Impressively, the Greyhounds had three players taken at the 2016 NHL draft and four at the 2015 proceedings.

Forwards Boris Katchouk (second round, Tampa Bay Lightning), Jack Kopacka (fourth round, Anaheim Ducks) and Tim Gettinger (fifth round, New York Rangers) were all NHL selections from the Greyhounds in 2016.

And in 2015, four Greyhounds became NHL draft picks — forwards Zachary Senyshyn (first round, Boston Bruins) and Blake Speers (third round, New Jersey Devils) and defensemen Colton White (fourth round, New Jersey) and Gustav Bouramman (seventh round, Minnesota Wild.)

What you think about “NHL scouts fond of Hounds”

  1. Congrats to those kids.
But Soo Greyhound organization should be ashamed of themselves for letting good local talent go. There are many local talented kids that the Hounds organization just lookover. Other OHL teams take care of their local kids unlike the Greyhounds!!!
Congrats to three on the NHL radar. But…Shame on you Hounds.

    1. I believe that the Hounds do what EVERY OTHER team does when drafting,,,,,,,,
take the best available player 1st, and try to fill your special needs 2nd.
You only have your picks when your turn comes, and the Hounds often steal
a “home town” boy fron some OTHER city in the OHL.

  2. I am willing to “one up ” you Randy and say that the ‘Hounds will finish in 1st Place in the Conference!
